Campaign Story
This is not an easy ask! So I appreciate you reading very much. My name is Maddy, I am 33 years old, and I work as a lecturer in English at the University of Illinois. I’ve always wanted to have a kid and while I’ve had several great relationships, they didn’t work out for one reason or another. So, I’ve decided to have a baby on my own! It wasn’t an easy decision, but now it’s one I’m really excited about. I’m excited to live a unique life, to build community around my baby that will be, and to teach them tolerance and love for those who do life differently.
I’m looking to raise $4200. I’m very lucky to have good insurance which will cover most of the fertility treatments, but sperm is really expensive–I had no idea! The bank I’m looking at charges $2100 a vial, which is why I’m hoping to raise double-that so I can buy two vials in case the first insemination doesn’t work.
Having a kid is comes with a big price tag. As such, I’m making changes in my life to be able to afford it, including taking on a new role at work which will send me to China and pay a lot more. I say this to show that I recognize that I can’t rely on donations to raise a kid. I’ll admit that this feels really weird to ask people for help when it is a personal choice and my responsibility. But I’m also trying to remember that life is hard, people who can help often want to, and none of us can do it alone–physically, emotionally, financially.
Thank you so much for your generous support!
